Robert J. Thorburn
EVART — Robert J. Thorburn, 82, passed away Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014, at his home in Evart.
Robert was born on Oct. 2, 1931, in Lansing, to Wesley J. and Eva (Gurd) Thorburn. Bob was a 1950 graduate of Holt High School. He married Fern L. Owen on June 27, 1953, in Holt. Bob and Fern moved to Evart from Haslett in 1960 when he built Bob’s Barber Shop on Evart’s Main Street. He barbered there for at least 40 years. Robert was very civic minded. He had served as president for the Evart Lion’s Club, and president of the Evart Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Evart, where served as superintendent the Sunday School and Church Council. He was also active in scouting, serving as den leader and scout master. Bob enjoyed golfing, gardening and canoeing.
Robert is survived by his wife of 61 years, Fern L. Thorburn; daughter, Kathy Thorburn, of Ypsilanti; son, Steven (Lisa) Thorburn, of California; grandson, Andrew Bates, of Medford, Mass.; and granddaughter, Karen Bates, of Ypsilanti.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Nancy; and brother, Wesley.
Funeral services for Robert J. Thorburn are at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2014, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Evart. Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2014, at Corey Funeral Home in Evart.
Internment will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Evart. Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Michigan, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Evart, or the charity of one’s choice.
