REED CITY — Reed City Brewing Company is holding its second annual golf outing July 8 at the Intimidator Golf Course, with proceeds going towards buying school supplies for children for the coming school year.

The organizer of the golf outing and co-owner of Reed City Brewing, Courtney Murphy, said being able to help the community means a lot to her, especially in a smaller community like Reed City.

"It's just a good feeling, you know?" Murphy said. "We just want to bring people smiles and joy."

Last year's golf outing proceeds went towards supporting one individual's fight against breast cancer.

"We want to pick something to support differently each year," Murphy said.

Murphy said she knew a lot of people liked to golf in the area, and that they just "went for it" last year.

"There are a lot of kinks to be worked out. But we're pretty excited for this year," Murphy said.

Murphy found herself as the organizer of the golf outing as she handles the company's social media and was the one engaging the community. She designed several special activities during the outing to make it more interesting, like wearing oven mitts, an eye patch or using a disc golf disc instead of a normal golf ball.

The golf outing occurs the day before RCBC's anniversary party, so Murphy hopes it'll bring more attention to that and result in more people from different areas trying RCBC's beers.

Next year, Murphy hopes they can take the outing to a bigger golf course. Not that the Intimidator isn't great, she said, but she wants 18 holes so they can have more teams and people involved in the outing.

"I get a lot of acknowledgment and people come up to me and say how thankful they are for putting on these events because, honestly, it takes a lot of time," Murphy said. "The community here, they go out of their way to show their appreciation for giving the community a place to gather and enjoy one another's company," she said.

"We are a small family business, run by me and my parents. We just love what we do. And we love being part of this community," Murphy said.
