Obituary: Mary L. (Hasson) Peterson

Mary L. (Hasson) Peterson

Mary L. (Hasson) Peterson, age 82, passed away on April 1, 2011. Mary was born in Cadillac, MI, on July 22, 1928 to Helen (Matzdorf) and Leo Hasson. She married Roe W. Peterson on July 4, 1948. They lived in the Flint area until Roe’s health required him to retire, at which time they moved to Hersey in 1967. She had been employed at the Reed City Hospital for 23 years. After her retirement from the hospital, she worked at the Reed City Schools part time.

Mary survived open-heart surgery and four years she was diagnosed with lung cancer. She decided to live without the chemo and radiation treatments, and outlived the doctor’s predictions. Her cause of death was due to her heart condition.

Mary is survived by her three children, Christian (Kathleen Smolinski) of Hartland; Cynthia (Richard) Fitch of LeRoy; and Patrick (Teri Shier) of Orleans; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren, with one more due to arrive in August.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 9 at 1 p.m. in Belding at the Johnson- Feuerstein Funeral Home on Pleasant Street, with a luncheon to follow at the American Legion in Belding.

Mary will be greatly missed by all those who loved her, as she was the type of person who all people should aspire to be: strong in her faith, loving, caring, forgiving, a hard worker, and generous to a fault.

Donations may be made to Hospice of Michigan and the Ionia Hospice.
