Norman Lee Benzing

BIG RAPIDS — Norman L. Benzing, 66, died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013.

Earlier in the year, Norman suffered health issues and spent his remaining life living the mantra he taught to so many: “Can’t never did anything.” He was an astute businessman and someone who could fix anything. Outdoorsmanship was one of Norman’s strengths and he spent a lifetime in the woods and on the waterways. He raised three strong men who in turn brought him grandchildren to mentor and mold. Norman was one of the Thirteen Iron Men, and proudly heralded this football lore, which was the other passion in his life. He was not only a player and a fan, but he was ultimately a coach and took pride in building character in our youth. His leadership and experience were largely influenced by his flight time in the jungles of Vietnam and he flew proudly the colors of the 7/17th, Air Cavalry-C Troop. His annual Nov. 15th ‘0 dark thirty’ valediction will live on: “Knock em’ dead.”

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Reed City Church of the Nazarene on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013. The funeral service will also take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013, at the Church of the Nazarene. Internment will be at Oakdale Cemetery in Hersey directly following.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either your local football program, or to the scholarship program for the Ruthless Riders 7/17th Air Cavalry, in care of Donald Schoenemann at 3517 Harvey Lake Rd., Highland, MI 48356.
