Martha Anne Jones
REED CITY — Martha Anne Jones, 52, of Reed City, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2014, at her residence.
She was born on Aug. 20, 1962, in Detroit, to Leonard and Ellen (Doll) Schmitt, was raised in Waterford and was a 1980 graduate of Waterford-Mott High School. Martha attended Grand Valley State College and was awarded a BSC in Mathematics in 1985. On Sept. 28, 1985, she was married in Waterford to Bruce Jones, of Reed City, who survives her. She was employed with the Deloitte-Haskins & Sells Tax Preparation Services of Houston, Texas, for 5 years before returning to Michigan where she and Bruce raised their 3 children. While acting as a full-time mom, she found time to operate a daycare service, coach the Reed City High School J.V. Girls Basketball team and volunteer at the St. Philip-Neri Catholic Church teaching catechism classes.
Once her children began school, she returned to Grand Valley State University and was awarded certificates in both education and special education. She was then employed with the Mecosta-Osceola Intermediate School District as a teacher for the emotionally impaired, with expertise in non-violent crisis intervention. She later taught elementary school mathematics in the Baldwin School District before becoming employed at G.T. Norman Elementary School in Reed City where she was a fourth grade teacher. Martha was an advocate for youth sports in the Reed City community and participated as a volunteer for many area youth sports teams. She held numerous coaching positions and at one time acted as the director of the Reed City Youth Recreation Committee. She loved her family dearly along with the many student athletes she coached throughout her career.
She is survived by her husband, Bruce Jones; children, Caitlin Marie (Joshua) Bearss, Corey Michael Jones and Kelsey Mariah Jones; parents, Leonard and Ellen Schmitt; siblings, Cecelia Marie (Henry) Post, Paul Anthony (Angela) Schmitt, Monica Jean (Alain) Blais and Rita Joanne (Jeffrey) Weber; mother and father-in-law, Ervin and Marilyn Jones; brothers and sisters-in-law, Michael (Heidi) Jones and Karen (David) Benson; 10 nieces and nephews; and several great aunts and uncles.
Visitation with the family will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24, 2014, at the St. Philip-Neri Catholic Church in Reed City. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014, at the St. Philip-Neri Catholic Church, with a viewing beginning at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to any of the following: St. Philip-Neri Catholic Church, G.T. Norman Elementary School and Reed City High School Athletic Department.
