Lyell E. Thomas
SEARS — Lyell E. Thomas, 88, of Sears, passed away on Friday, July 4, 2014, at Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.
Lyell was born on Feb. 20, 1926, in Sears, to Ray and Opal Jane (Brackett) Thomas. He graduated from Evart High School in 1943. Lyell was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He married Geneva Louise Kushmaul on May 7, 1950, in Sears. He farmed after he got out of the service, retiring in 1992. He was the Orient Township supervisor for a number of years and worked at Liberty Dairy and for the Department of Agriculture doing crop survey work. Lyell loved his family, grandkids, and Charlie, his beloved Schnauzer. He was a published poet who enjoyed music and traveling. He liked to hunt and fish in his earlier years.
Lyell is survived by his wife of 64 years, Geneva L. Thomas, of Sears; daughter, Connie (Sam) Kwiecien, of Loughman, Fla.; two sons, Les (Sally) Thomas, of Potterville, and Mike (Deb) Thomas, of Sears; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Lowell (Janet) Thomas, of Midland; and a brother-in-law, Cal Pritchard, of Midland.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Mona Lou Pritchard.
Funeral services for Lyell Eldon Thomas are at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at the Corey Funeral Home in Evart. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at the funeral home.
Internment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Evart. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Reed City VFW or the Renucci Hospitality House at Butterworth Hospital, 100 Michigan St. NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503.
