Leland Leonard Lindquist

LEROY — Leland Leonard Lindquist, 88, of LeRoy, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, at his home in LeRoy.

He was born on June 15, 1925, in LeRoy, to Oscar Leander and Nannie (Lindell) Lindquist and grew up on the family farm near LeRoy during the Great Depression. During his teen years, to help spread the manpower of a family blessed with nine children with seven being boys, he lived with neighboring families to provide valued farm labor in return for room and board. He was a 1944 graduate of LeRoy High School at which he helped guide the school’s basketball team to the Class D State Championship Basketball Game losing to Benton Harbor. After graduation, he drove a school bus for LeRoy Public Schools, then went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army, deploying to Germany in the post-war aftermath of World War II.

He married Esther Eva Trimner, of Reed City, on June 27, 1953, in Big Rapids, and then lived the majority of his married life on a small farm in LeRoy. He was a licensed electrician working at Kelvinator Manufacturing of Grand Rapids for a few years before returning home to work at Miller Industries/Tubelite Industries in Reed City for 34 years. He served on the LeRoy Village Council and received special satisfaction in providing, in his spare time, electrical and plumbing repair services to the elderly and to farms in the LeRoy area.

He is survived by his wife, Esther Lindquist; daughter, Carol (Gary) Norton, of Croton; son, Gerald (Mary Beth) Lindquist, of LeRoy; sisters, Mary Ann Beilfuss, of Reed City, and Eleanor Spicuzza, of Wyoming; sister-in-law, Ardith Gugle, of LeRoy; grandchildren, Mathew (Caitlin) Norton, Jason Norton, Anna, Daria and Tyler Lindquist; and a great-granddaughter, Charlotte Norton; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Nannie Lindquist; brothers, August, Donald, Fredrick, John, Lester (Jiggs), and Lewis; infant siblings, Lucille, Elmer and Robert; and several sisters-in-law and brothers in-law.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, at Pruitt Livingston Funeral Home of Reed City. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at the Pruitt Livingston Funeral Home.
