John Robert Carney

HERSEY — John Robert “Jinx” Carney died Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011 at Spectrum Health – Reed City Hospital at the age of 86. He was born Sept. 15, 1925, in South Bend, Ind., to Robert and Gladys Carney.

He is survived by his beloved wife Lorna; and loving daughters Carla (Don) Tomanica, of Lansing, and Kim (Tim) Holton, of Royal Oak; grandchildren Matthew Tomanica, Jennifer (John) Kebler, Jeff (Carol) Leikam, and Claire Holton; great-grandchildren Emma, Kennedy and Caleb Kebler and April Leikam; as well as many dear nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by daughter Paula Wohlfert and grandson Marc Leikam.

John was known by many other names: Jinx, Bob, Bobby, Daddy and Grandpa. After graduating from Jackson High School and serving in the Navy during World War II, he played baseball for the Chicago White Sox for a short time. He then took a job at Consumers Power, where he supervised line crews until his retirement. John was a prominent fastball pitcher in Lansing leagues for many years, and a certified scuba diver who worked with the Michigan State Police. He was a respected member of the Masons, Elks, Moose Lodge and Oddfellows. In 1987, John and Lorna moved from Lansing to Hersey, where they made many new friends and John became known for his big heart, great sense of humor, and storytelling abilities. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

In keeping with John’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. Friends and family may gather to share memories on Saturday, Dec. 3 from 2 to 5 p.m. at 17709 Rapids Drive, Hersey.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family to be used for a charity of their choice. Arrangements were entrusted to the McDowell Funeral Home.
