John Allan Kokkonen
EVART — John Allan Kokkonen, 71, of Evart, passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, Dec. 26, 2014, surrounded by his loving family.
John was born in Virginia, Minn., on Jan. 26, 1943, to Hildred and Allan Kokkonen. He attended Roosevelt High School and went on to Mesabi State College, Winona State College and Central Michigan University where he received his M.A. in social science.
Mr. Kokkonen was a teacher for 40 years. John taught in Marion and enjoyed sharing his love of history with everyone. He met and married Diane in 1975. They were married for 35 years. He loved his children and adored his grandchildren very much. He also participated in the Cadillac Area Scandinavian Society. John also was a proud member of the Civil War Round Table.
He is survived by one son, Allan (Danielle) Kokkonen; one daughter, Sara (Tony) Vallette; one sister, Helene (Vern) Bement; two granddaughters, Amaya Vallette, and Noah Ryan; two grandsons, Joshua Vallette, and Kael Kokkonen.
Mr. Kokkonen was predeceased by his parents; and wife, Diane.
Funeral services for John Allan Kokkonen are at 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, at the Corey Funeral Home, in Evart. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 5, 2015. Interment will be at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Cadillac.
