James Jay Neuman
EVART — James Jay Neuman, 83, passed away on Sunday, June 15, 2014, at his home in Evart.
He was born on Feb. 11, 1931, to Fred and Vera (Gitchell) Neuman at the family farm north of Evart in Hartwick Township. Jim was the youngest of six children. He attended country school until entering Evart High School. He graduated as president of his class in 1949.
Jim served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. After basic training he was assigned duty aboard the U.S.S. Boxer aircraft carrier in the Pacific. Prior to and after his Marine tour, he worked at the Buick auto plant in Flint.
He married Bonnie Lucille Baker, daughter of Edwin and Rachael Baker, of Battle Creek, on Aug. 10, 1957, and they were married for 56 wonderful years. They lived and raised their family on a farm west of the family’s homestead. Jim worked as a foreman at the Evart Products Company, from which he retired in November of 1989.
After retiring, Jim expanded his farm acreage and beef herd. He enjoyed going to auctions and collecting “treasures” as he called them. Jim was elected to serve as a trustee for Hartwick Township for a number of years. Also during his retirement years, Jim and Bonnie had the chance to do some traveling. They traveled overseas one summer to visit their Dutch and German exchange students and their families. They also celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary with a trip to Alaska.
Jim is survived by his wife, Bonnie, of Evart; four children, Jeffrey Neuman, of Evart, Andrea Hillard, of Cadillac, Steven Neuman, of Evart, and Melanie (Douglas) Wirth, of Evart; brother, Herb Neuman, of Henderson, Nev.; eight grandchildren, Krysta (Ben) Leutz, Kayla Neuman, Erika Hillard, Ryan Hillard, Evia Neuman, Jacob (Andrea) Wirth, Chelsea Wirth, and Andrew Wirth; and his four great-grandchildren, Aidan, Logan Bronson and Charlotte; and one unborn great-grandchild, due in August, 2014. He also is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Preceding Jim in death were his parents, Fred and Vera Neuman; brothers and their spouses, Bill (Lila) Neuman, of Grand Rapids, Andy (Evelyn) Neuman, of Flint; sisters, Geneva (Ray) Benscoter, of Waterford, and Marge (Max) Sneary, of Marion.
Funeral services for Jim Neuman are at 3 p.m. on Friday, June 20, 2014, at the Evart United Methodist Church, with Pastor Melodye Surgeon-Rider officiating. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 19, 2014, at the Corey Funeral Home in Evart and an hour prior to services at the church.
Internment will be in the Maple Valley Cemetery, Hartwick Township.
