Harold J. Soper

HERSEY — Harold J. Soper, 88, of Hersey, passed away Monday, March 26, 2012, at Spectrum Health Reed City Hospital.

He was born Aug. 31, 1923, in Lansing to Charles and Nellie (Barr) Soper and moved to the Hersey area at age 7. He attended Crapo and Ball schools.

Harold married Lilly Peterson on Nov. 22, 1947. She preceded him in death after 50 years of marriage on Dec. 31, 1997.

He had worked as a crane operator at Tubelite. He was a member of the Hersey United Methodist Church, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, cards and bingo.

Harold served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Surviving are his children, Lloyd (Janet) Soper of Hersey, Vernon (Rose) Soper of Wyoming, Helen (Frank) Bayle of Chippewa Lake and Dorothy (Tim) Scott of Cedar Springs; eight grandchildren, Ginger Boogard, Frank (Amy) Bayle, Wendi (Scott) Younkers, Matthew (Lydia) Soper, Eric (Daisy) Soper, James Scott, Lilly Scott and Allison Scott; four great-grandchildren, Trevor Bayle, Haley Bayle, Billie Soper and Dani Soper. Also surviving are his special friend, Jolene Woldfogel; and best friend, Maggie.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and longtime kind companion Katie.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 29, at the Hersey United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mary Beth Rhine officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Hersey Village Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 28, at McDowell Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
