Golf outing raises nearly $24,000 for Wheatlake Fund

LEROY – The sun was shining at The Rose on Saturday as 30 teams and numerous sponsors raised $23,861 at the annual Wheatlake Charity Golf Outing.

Money raised will benefit the Susan P. Wheatlake Cancer and Wellness Fund, which was established to reach out to individuals facing a cancer diagnosis. “It helps to have a cause a lot of people can identify with,” said Tom Hogensen, community relations director for Mecosta County Medical Center Foundation. Teams of golfers came from all around the Mecosta and Osceola area and sponsors purchased tee signs, sponsored one of 18 holes or donated to the outing. The event raised nearly $6,000 more than was raised two years ago; rain dampened participation in last year’s outing. The event was moved to June this year after being held in September in previous years, which benefited event organizers. Hogensen also creditted The Rose staff and facilities for the success of the outing this year. “This is a beautiful course, and (The Rose staff) do a great job,” he said. The Susan P. Wheatlake Cancer and Wellness Fund is an endowment of the Mecosta County Medical Center Foundation. The fund benefits the Susan P Wheatlake Center, located on the MCMC campus. The center provides free services, such as reading materials, a boutique for patients to do their hair and nails, computers for research and other items for individuals facing a cancer diagnosis. The center recently has seen an increas in patients, and administrators are looking into ways to expand services in the center to serve more people, Hogensen said. Major sponsors of the outing were DJ McQuestion and Sons, Northern Precision, Crossroads Chevrolet, Superior Hardwoods, Thompson Milk Haulers, Meijer and Russell’s Body Shop.
