TAMPA - Glenn Melvin Burke, 88, passed away on May 22, 2014 at the James Haley Virginia Hospital in Tampa, Fla.

He was born to Glenn and Emma Burke, in Detroit, on Sept. 24, 1925. He graduated from Fordson School and then joined the Marines. He served three years in the Pacific and received a Purple Heart. In 1948, he joined the Michigan State Police. He was stationed in Paw Paw, Cheboygan, Flint, Reed City and Lansing, where he was promoted to Detective Sgt., and worked out of the attorney general's office. He retired in Jan. 1973.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also built several field stone fireplaces for family and friends.

Mr. Burke is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Catherine (Connie); son, Michael; daughters, Jeanne (Bill) Roggow, of Luther, and Julie (Stanley) Kysela, of Big Rapids; six grandchildren, Jason (Lisa) Roggow, Tatum (Rick) Ulrich, Damon Roggow, Brian Burke, Daniel (Julia) Kysela and Carly (John) Kysela; eight great-grandchildren, Michael (Morgan), Rickelle, Mariah, Erika, Jake, Kristin, Ryder and Giovanni; one great-great grandson, Grayson; sister, Lucille (Leo) Perrin, of Mecosta; and stepsister, Patti Burke, of Ore.

Cremation has taken place and a private burial took place at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell.

A celebration of Glenn's life will be held for family and friends from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, at Stan and Julie Kysela's home, 9000 East 12 Mile Road Big Rapids. A light lunch will be provided.
