Florence Elna (Flo) Peterson

LEROY — Florence Elna (Flo) Peterson, 86, of LeRoy, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, March 14, 2014, at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.

She was born on Aug. 17, 1927, in LeRoy to George and Helen (Beckman) Nelson. She was the sixth of 12 children raised on a farm and part of a very loving, hard-working family. She graduated from LeRoy High School in 1945, and was a cheerleader for the 1944 and 1945 boys basketball team which reached the state finals in Lansing. On Nov. 21, 1947, she married Eldred (Pete) Peterson in Reed City, who preceded her in death on Jan. 17, 2003.

Flo stayed at home and raised her family, but also worked numerous jobs over the years of her life. Most prominent was becoming a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service in LeRoy, in April 1970. She continued in that capacity until becoming Post Master of the LeRoy Post Office branch on Aug. 19, 1983. She served in that position until her retirement on Nov. 30, 1990.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, of LeRoy. She enjoyed her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren very much. Everyone knew there was always a cup of coffee and fresh baked cookies available at Flo’s kitchen table. She also enjoyed gardening, music, and took great pride in her home and yard.

She is survived by her son, Gary (Gina) Peterson, of LeRoy; daughter, Julie (Paul) Janik, of LeRoy; grandchildren, Paul (Sarah) Peterson, Jill (Bill) Johnson, Tricia (Steve) Wessels, Allison (James) Syrewicze, Andrew (Crystal) Syrewicze; great-grandchildren, Ellie, Jenna, Jillian, Jared, Kevin, Shelby and Evan. Also surviving is brother, Marvin (Shirley) Nelson, of LeRoy; sisters, Doris (Emil) Carlson, of Muskegon, Elaine Baker, of Grand Rapids, Isabel Ochs, of LeRoy, and Jackie Spence, of LeRoy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Helen Nelson; sisters, Eleanor and Georgianna; brothers, Arvid, George, Norman and Douglas.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at the LeRoy United Methodist Church with Pastor Scott Loomis officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at the Pruitt-Livingston Funeral Home in Reed City.
