Emma Jean Hewgley

REED CITY — Emma Jean Hewgley, 70, of Reed City, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014, at Spectrum Health Reed City Hospital.

She was born on March 31, 1944, in Grosse Pointe, to Aloysius and Dorothy McClellan. On May 20, 1961, she married Richard Hewgley Sr., who passed away in March 2014.

She was employed for 26 years in local law enforcement as a dispatcher and was a certified corrections officer for the Lake County Sheriff’s Department. In 1986, she became employed as a corrections officer with the Osceola County Sheriff's Department and finished her career as sergeant of corrections when she retired in 2006, with more than 20 years of service. She made many lifelong friends over the course of her career.

She enjoyed working in her flower garden and was passionate about caring for rescued animals that she referred to as her "fur kids." Family was a joy to her, especially being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an avid University of Michigan sports fan that cheered on the Maize and Blue every season. Go Blue!

She is survived by her sons, Richard (Brenda) Hewgley Jr., of Akron, and Charles “Sonny” (Michele) Hewgley, of Oxford; daughter, Dawn (Jim) Dodd, of Tustin; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one niece; two nephews; and many treasured special friends and neighbors.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard Hewgley Sr.; sister, Mary Lois Gray; and granddaughter, Carrie Rose Beilfuss.

A celebration of her life and burial of remains in the Pleasant Plains Cemetery will take place at a future date.
