EVART. – Donald Paul Witt, of Evart, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, April 20, 2012. He was 71.

Mr. Witt was born Sept. 23, 1940, in Northville, to Samuel and Josephine (Kennel) Witt. The family moved to Evart when Mr. Witt was a small child and he spent most of his childhood and teen years in Evart and returning to Evart after he retired from the military.

On Feb. 12, 1958, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served nine years. He then joined the U.S. Air Force and served 11 years. His service included two tours in Vietnam. He received many commendations, ribbons, awards and medals including two Oak Leaf Clusters, was a member of the Strategic Air Command (SAC), and was chosen many times throughout his military career as Maintenance Technician of the month. Mr. Witt retired as a Technical Sergeant in 1978. After retiring from the military, Mr. Witt worked as plant electrician for Dean Foods Liberty Dairy in Evart for 24 years, retiring from that position in 2002.

Shortly after enlisting in the U.S. Navy, he married Penny Gerred and they later divorced. They had three children.

Mr. Witt married Bonnie Fry on Sept. 17, 1994, at the Evart United Methodist Church where they are members. They lived very happily together for 17 ? years, sharing their faith in God and enjoying their family, their garden, fishing, long walks and the wildlife around their home, in addition to traveling to Florida in the winter for the last several years.

Mr. Witt loved to fish and did so at every opportunity, both in Michigan and Florida. He enjoyed carving walking sticks and fish; and one thing that gave him great happiness was “doing for others.” Before beginning travels to Florida, he served on several boards and groups at the Evart United Methodist Church and was a member of the VFW.

Mr. Witt was preceded in death by his parents; and his dear sister- and brother-in-law, Evelyn “Sissy” and Bob Gladstone.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; a brother, Paul (Mary) Witt, of Wellston; a son, Scott (Cheryl) Witt, of Iron River; two daughters, Robin (Keith) Keathley, of Evart, and Shawn Witt, of Big Rapids; a stepson, Michael (John) Fry, of Minneapolis; a stepdaughter, Andrea Fry, and her friend Rich, of Grand Rapids; grandchildren, Katie, Matt, Christopher and Brandon; step-grandchildren, Jack and Margaret; mother-in-law and father-in-law Norma and Perry Stowell, of Woodland; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Dianne and Wayne Graner, of Windsor, Calif., sister-in-law Rev. Peggy Wilkins, of Englewood, Fla., brother-in-law and sister-in-law Tom and Sharon Carter, of Elk River, Minn., brother-in-law Timothy Carter and his friend Jackie of Lake Odessa; step-sister-in-law and brother-in-law Julie and Lorin Oversmith, step brother-in-law Rodger Stowell of Woodland; nieces, nephews, cousins; special friends Herb, Michelle and Danielle Gray; and multitudes of friends beyond count.

Cremation has taken place and according to Mr. Witt’s wishes no funeral will be held. Thank you in advance for your caring thoughts and prayers.
