Dennis Ellison

Dennis Mark Ellison, 71, of Chase, was called home by the Lord on Saturday June 2, 2012, in Grand Rapids, Butterworth Hospital. Dennis was born Aug. 16, 1940, in Detroit, to Ted and Marguerite (Vick) Ellison.

Dennis served in the United States Army from 1958 to 1961, with the 25th Infantry Division, 25th Medical Battalion, Co. B, 2nd Platoon at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. He attended Highland Park Jr. College, Wayne State University and graduated from Eastern University with a B.S. in biology and general science, and M.A. in science education. He received two National Science Foundation grants from Michigan State (geology) and Carleton College (astronomy and geology).

Dennis was employed as a teacher in South Redford from 1969 to 1975 and served as a VISTA volunteer education program director with the Idaho Migrant Council in Twin Falls, Idaho, from 1973 to 1974. He served with the U.S. Forest Service Baldwin office as a forestry supervisor with the Youth Conservation Corps from 1976 to 1980 and taught science at Baldwin High School from 1980 to his retirement in 2002.

He was the first director of Lake Co. Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and served Chase Township since 1976 as supervisor, clerk, assessor, and board of review member.

On Sept. 8, 1962, he married his high school sweetheart, Judy (Hamm), who preceded him in death.

Dennis was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his daughter, Charmaine (Todd) Rainke; and grandchildren, Bret and Allison Rainke, all of Grand Rapids. Also surviving is one brother, Keith (Marcella) Ellison, of Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Virgil Ellison.

Visitation for Mr. Ellison will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, June 8 at Verdun Funeral Home in Baldwin. There will be visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Ann Catholic Church prior to the funeral, which will take place at the church at 11 a.m. A light luncheon will follow the funeral at St. Ann’s meals building and burial will take place at 2 p.m. in the Chase Village cemetery.
