Crossroads Theatre Guild prepares for 'The Girls in 509'

Director: 'It’s a very interesting play, with a lot of comedy in it'

REED CITY — Theatre fans in Reed City are in for some big laughs and gasps.

The Crossroads Theatre Guild is preparing for their production of "The Girls in 509," a lesser known play by Howard Teichmann.

As summarized by director Russell Peak, the play is a "political comedy" about "two girls who lock themselves away after the 1932 election because the Democrats won and they’re afraid the world’s gonna go to hell."

"It’s kind of a political farce. It’s a comedy. It’s very funny, very fast paced," Peak said.

The play features some regular actors and some newcomers. The newcomers include Ashton Moyer and Paul Tumminello, both experienced actors from the Evart area. Returning actors include David Ball and Melissa Langworthy, who should be well known by the community as they have been in several of the guild's past productions.

Peak invites the public to attend the show's rehearsals, which are 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at the guild's building at 249 W. Upton Ave., Reed City.

Peak said other than one actress dropping out, the preparations are going swimmingly.

"Right now we’re in the middle of building sets and adjusting the lights. It’s all coming together real well," he said.

This is not the first time Peak has done this play, and expects that the shows will be gradually more packed as word gets out about it.

"There’s some shocking moments in there. The audience will gasp a couple times," he said.

"We usually get a good crowd out. We can seat 130, and we get anywhere from 50 to full house, depending," Peak added.

Peak said he doesn't expect to pack the house because it's a lesser known play, but if he did, he would be very happy.

There will be an intermission with concessions. Peak said to expect the whole production to last a little over two hours.

Auditions for the guild's next production, "A Christmas Story," are coming up at the end of October, according to Peak.
