Carl Eugene Reed Sr.

Carl Eugene Reed Sr., 82, of Sears, passed away Saturday, March 3, in Chippewa Twp., Mecosta County.

Mr. Reed was born Nov. 12, 1929, in Hersey, to Leslie Reed and Esther Paine Reed. He married Dorothy Ann Vaas June 30, 1950, in Grand Rapids, and she preceded him in death May 30, 2008.

Carl owned his own service station and worked for several automobile dealerships as a mechanic in the Grand Rapids area. He worked for GM for 30 years, retiring to the Sears area from Dorr in 1989. Mr. Reed was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Reed City. He had been active in the Boy Scouts for more than 40 years and had received the Lamb Award, the highest award given to a Lutheran Scout. Carl enjoyed TV repair, woodworking and the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, bird watching and gardening.

Mr. Reed is survived by five daughters, Barbara (Allan) Couturier, of Lake, Patricia (Robert) Bolling, of Burlington, Carol (Mark) Powell, of Dorr, Karen Stamp, of Montana, and Judith Reed, of Dorr; one son, Carl E. Reed Jr.; wife Heather, of Middleville; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Barbara (Jerry) Covey, of Stanwood, and Doris Dudek, of Saginaw; two brothers, Glenn (Flossie) Reed, of Lakeview, and Don (Ellen) Carpenter, of Burton; and three sister-in-laws, Martha, Phyllis and Iovia. Carl was preceded in death by his parents; wife Dorothy; two grandsons, Stephen and Timothy Knapp; and three brothers, Arthur Reed, Norman Reed and Raymond Bancroft.

Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 8, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Reed City with Rev. Jeffrey Potter officiating. Visitation is 10 a.m. until time of services Thursday at the church. Burial will be in the Grant Center Cemetery, South in Mecosta County. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Building Fund at Trinity Lutheran Church. Arrangements entrusted to the Corey Funeral Home, Evart.
