Aretha Franklin's granddaughter Grace Franklin auditioned for "American Idol" but she did not get a ticket to Hollywood after some lively debating from judges in Sunday's episode.

The 15-year-old high school student attended "Idol" auditions with her parents Kafi and Kecalf Cunningham. Grace sang the Lauryn Hill version of the Roberta Flack hit "Killing Me Softly," as well as her grandmother's hit "Ain't No Way."

As a child, Grace was "really close" with Aretha and traveled a lot with her, according to a video interview on the show.

"I don't think I could fully grasp the fact that she was known worldwide because to me she was always just grandma," Grace said in a video interview on the show. "I feel like people expect me to sing exactly like her, but I am my own artist. I have my own voice."

The performance Grace gave sparked a debate between the three judges, Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan and Katy Perry.

Perry pushed her fellow judges to give Grace a chance on the show. She was the only judge to give Grace a yes.

"I think you have stardust and sparkle all over you," Perry told Grace during the audition.

After heavy campaigning by Perry in which she walked off the stage in protest, Bryan and Richie agreed Grace wasn't ready for the competition.

"The age and the voice have got to all come together, and on the same path," Bryan said during the audition.

Despite it being a no, for now, Richie wants Grace to remain optimistic and come back for another audition.

"Grace Franklin, I love you," Richie said during the audition. "And I think the best thing for you in life is to take a shot at going backward. Go back and get a running start and come back at this again."

"American Idol" airs Sunday nights on ABC.
