LEROY — The Pine River Area Schools Board of Education appointed Kimberly Dean as a new board member during its regular monthly meeting on Monday, Oct. 10. “We had two great candidates who both applied for the position,” said Superintendent Matt Lukshaitis. “We are lucky to have community members who care deeply about the school system and are willing to serve. “Being a member of the board of education takes commitment in both hours and decision-making. It can be hard sometimes, especially when it comes to money or making cuts. Right now we are building and renovating, so it is an exciting time at Pine River.” Dean fills the seat left vacant by Ron Schalow, who resigned in September to accept a job offer and had to move out of state. Dean will serve on the board until November 2018, at which time the seat will be filled during the election until December 2020. “I think Mrs. Dean will do a great job on our board of education,” Lukshaitis said. “I look to forward to working with her.” Dean has three grandchildren in the district and said she wants to be more involved in the community and with the schools. In other action, the board hired Sharon Wheeler for the open position of high school cook. Wheeler fills the vacancy following the retirement of Darlene Terrill.
