REED CITY \u2014 Reed City Boy Scout Troop 74 conducted a flag retirement ceremony on Flag Day, June 14, at the Reed City Depot. The scouts retired 53 worn American flags, saluting each flag as it was retired. This ceremony was conducted under the guidelines of both the US Flag Code and Boy Scouts of America guidelines. Title 36, Section 176, Paragraph (K) of the United States Code states: "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.\u201d The BSA publication "Our Flag" states: "When the national flag is worn beyond repair, burn it thoroughly and completely on a modest, but blazing fire. This should be done in a simple manner with dignity and respect. Be sure the flag is reduced to ashes unrecognizable as a former flag." Following the ceremony, the scouts retrieved 31 American flags that were placed on display in Reed City in honor of Flag Day.
