OSCEOLA COUNTY – As school lets out and the summer vacation season begins, Reed City and Evart will soon be a hub of family activity from the Evart Independence Day festivities to the Reed City Great American Crossroads Celebration. “We are looking forward to our summer activities and spending time outside,” said Suzie Williams, Reed City Area Chamber of Commerce director. “We only have these three months of warm weather and we want to get people outside to have some fun.” The summer’s festivities will kick off in the area with a Memorial Day commemoration in both communities, beginning with a flea market in Evart Friday and Saturday as well as parades in both communities on Monday. One day later, the first Taste of Osceola food showcase event will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 29, at the Osceola 4-H FFA Fairgrounds community building in Evart. County restaurants, caterers and storefront vendors will provide diners with a taste of their most popular dishes at the event, sponsored by the 2012 class of the Osceola Leadership Summit. “This is a great time for (folks from) the entire county to come and sample great food,” said Al Weinberg, Osceola Leadership Summit facilitator. “We have great restaurants and caterers in our county and often times we don’t know they’re here.” Tickets cost $10 for adults, $5 for children age four to 10 and children under four get in free. Proceeds raised will support the Osceola County Commission on Aging senior meals program as well as a scholarship for the Osceola Leadership Summit. The Independence Day celebration in Evart will begin July 3 with a Beatles tribute band, Shout, serenading crowds at the fairgrounds stadium. “They look like the Beatles and they sound like the Beatles and they’ll be playing from 7 p.m. until dusk,” said Connie Douglas, Evart Chamber of Commerce president. Fireworks will begin at dusk and donations will be accepted at the event to help cover the $18,000 cost of the show. But the fun won’t end when the fireworks stop. The celebration will continue on July 4 with the annual parade at 11 a.m. and Party in the Park and chicken barbecue at noon, along with two new editions, including a 5-K race starting at 9:30 a.m. beginning at Evart High School and ending at Riverside Park and a craft show during the chicken barbecue. “We have it planned so the runners should be coming down Main St. while the people are lined up for the parade so they can cheer them on,” Douglas said. “The finish line will be at Riverside Park where (runners) can relax under a shade tree and enjoy a chicken barbecue.” Organizers hope to see around 30 vendors at the craftshow, which will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Those interested in the registering for a free space at the event can call Douglass at (231) 250-8700. The event also will include food from vendors such as the Lions Club, Osceola League of Arts and Humanities, Evart Car Club and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs as well as inflatables for children, games, live music and bingo provided by the VFW. A part of the area’s regional heritage, the Non-electric Musical Funfest (the Dulcimer festival,) will be held July 19-22 at the Evart fairgrounds. Musicians, festival-goers and community members will flock from all over the state for the largest hammered dulcimer gathering in the state. Another summer highlight, the Osceola 4-H FFA Fair, will be held July 29-August 4. 4-H members from near and far will show pigs, calves, sheep and participate in a variety of fun activities. The Reed City Area Chamber of Commerce golf outing will be held June 8 and the Evart Chamber will hold their own August 10, both at Spring Valley Golf Course. The Great American Crossroads Celebration - A Family Festival will be held August 16-19 in Reed City. The festival will include a parade, softball tournament and various other activities including the crowning of Miss Reed City. A schedule will be finalized and posted on www.reedcity.org soon.
