HERSEY — Community members are invited to enjoy fall games and fun at the third annual Hersey Harvest Food Drive Festival. The festival will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 29 at Mosaic Park in Hersey. People of all ages can play in a bounce house, participate in childrens games, have their faces painted, make crafts at a craft table and sign up to win a bicycle in a raffle. In the spirit of fall fun, the festival also will include a pumpkin seed spitting contest and a hay treasure dig. “We take a bale of hay and spread it all out (during the hay treasure dig.) We put a bunch of toys in there and the kids can dig through,” said event organizer Robin Marvel, noting that each child is limited to two prizes to ensure fairness. Along with fun and games, the annual Hersey Harvest Food Drive Festival aims to positively impact the community. The goal of the event is to collect food to donate to local food banks. Attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food donation to the event to help feed local families. Food donations will be shared with the Reed City Ministerial Association Food Pantry, Project Starburst and the WISE Shelter. Having been a recipient of food pantry items in the past, Marvel founded the event three years ago as a way to give back to organizations that helped her family. When she heard that local pantries were struggling, the Hersey resident wanted to help stock their shelves. “Growing up, my mom and step dad used our food pantry a lot to supplement our food,” Marvel said. “The opportunity to give back is one of great honor for me.” Last year’s event drew around 100 families, which was double the participation of the 2010 event. Food donations collected filled the back of a pick-up truck and helped feed 80 families. “It’s awesome being able to do that and knowing that people aren’t going to sleep hungry,” Marvel said. “My ultimate goal is to have a semi truck trailer out there full.” Fall refreshments such as apple cider, milk and donuts will be available for those who attend the festival. Items for the event were donated by Mosaic, Bernie’s Place, Hersey Party Store and Walmart. For more information on the festival, visit www.herseyharvestfestival.webs.com.
