REED CITY\u00a0-\u00a0Jeff and Chriss Carmichael, of Reed City, were recently selected as runners-up\u00a0in the Michigan Milk Producers Association (MMPA) 2013 Outstanding Young Dairy Cooperators\u00a0Program. They represented MMPA's District 5 and the Evart Local in the annual OYDC\u00a0Conference held Aug. 15 and 16 and were\u00a0Carmichaels were selected to participate in the program earlier\u00a0this year by fellow dairy farmers in their district. Chriss farms in partnership with her parents on Cedar Grove Farm. The family milks 170 cows\u00a0and farms 1,200 acres. Jeff and Chriss work together to lead a local 4-H Club and county Farm Bureau\u00a0discussion group. They are both very active in their church as well. Each year, one couple or individual is selected from 10 district winners to represent MMPA at\u00a0various industry and association activities. Michael and Jordan Noll of Croswell, were selected\u00a0as the state winning 2013 OYDCs. Selection of the OYDC is based on the applicant's farming operations, farm-related and\u00a0community activities and demonstrated leadership abilities. The state OYDC Conference, held at MMPA headquarters in Novi, provides\u00a0participants with information about milk marketing activities, cooperatives, milk testing procedures\u00a0and other current events within the dairy industry. The program has been held annually the past 63 years. "The OYDC program identifies outstanding young leaders in our organization and provides an\u00a0opportunity for them to gain a greater understanding of milk marketing activities and MMPA," said\u00a0Ken Nobis, MMPA president. All of the MMPA District OYDCs will be officially recognized at MMPA's 2014 Annual Meeting\u00a0to be held next March in Lansing. MMPA is a member-owned and operated cooperative serving over 2,000 dairy farmers in\u00a0Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio and Indiana.
