Sixth through eighth grade students from Marion Middle School had the opportunity to enter the VFW Post No. 6015 Patriots Pen Youth Essay Contest. The essay contest encourages youth to study history, and with their own personal experiences in daily life, express their view on the theme "What Freedom Means To Me."
Althea Frayer, chairman, and Robert Friend, co-chair, presented the awards and citations to:
- Andrea L. Weaver — first place award, receiving $100
- Alexis Salisbury — second place award, receiving $75
- Jasmine N. Book — third place award, receiving $50
The first place essay will go on to District 12 competitions. All students are encouraged to enter next year's contest. A first-place winner can go on to enter the national competition and could receive $5,000 and a trip to Washington D.C.
