Voluntary layoffs help trim Evart budget

EVART — Two Evart city employees have volunteered to resign during the midst of city layoffs due to tight budget restrictions.

Evart Police Officer Michelle Gebben and Department of Public Works employee John Miscokowski have announced they will be leaving their positions at the end of the fiscal year.

"They are dedicated employees who stepped up to the plate," said Evart City Manager Zack Szakacs. "The budget is balanced right now because we lost those two positions, but we may need to lay off one more."

He said there is a possibility to recall Gebben at a later date, if voters approve a public safety millage that may end up on the November ballot.

A public hearing regarding the budget is set for the Monday, May 5 council meeting. The budget document must be approved by council members by the Monday, May 19 meeting.
