REED CITY — Students at Reed City’s Norman Elementary have a new schedule this year that includes a supplemental science and technology class with teacher Denise Nelson.

Every class from kindergarten through fifth grade meets for 35 minutes every week in addition to the lessons they receive in their regular class. This past week, the second grade classes were studying about landforms such as volcanoes with Nelson, and earthquakes and landslides with their teachers.

For a better visual on how volcanoes erupt and the effect it has on the earth, students built their own volcanoes. Many volcanoes erupted on the playground as groups performed their experiments. When eruptions ceased, students studied their volcanoes and even measured the landslides to get a better idea how their landform changed.
