OSCEOLA COUNTY — Icy roads appear to be the cause of a fatal accident involving a semi on Tuesday in Osceola County’s Sylvan Township.

Osceola County Sheriff’s deputies were called at 8:21 a.m. to the scene of the accident, located on M-66 near 9 Mile Road, about nine miles northeast of Evart.

A semi-truck traveling northbound on M-66 collided with a passenger car traveling southbound on the highway. Investigation of the scene indicates that the semi-truck lost control on the icy road, causing it to jack-knife and slide over to the southbound lane and into oncoming traffic. A southbound vehicle with two people inside was then hit by the semi.

Both adult occupants of that vehicle were killed. The driver of the semi was not injured. A passenger of the semi received minor injuries and was transported to Reed City Hospital.

Alcohol is not believed to be factor. The names of victims are being withheld pending identification and notification of family. The accident remains under investigation.

Deputies closed down M-66 from 9 Mile Road to 7 Mile Road, diverting traffic while the accident scene was investigated.

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Michigan State Police, Osceola County Emergency Medical Services and Evart Fire/Rescue.
