The Great Outdoors

Trinity Lutheran students learn from outdoor education course

CLARE — Twelve students from Trinity Lutheran School in Reed City recently spent three days and two nights getting to experience the great outdoors as part of the Outdoor Education program at Camp Rotary in Clare.

Principal Jason Harder, along with eighth-graders Jonathan Calabrese, Sierra Schneidt and Sophia Bianchi and seventh-graders Quentin San Cartier, Nathaniel Huss, Grant Rhode, Trey Wallace, Heather Van Syckle, Josie Hoppes, Sydney Himes, Kathryn Keller and Megan Knuth, joined students from four other Lutheran schools at the camp.

Throughout their stay, the students did a lot of team- and confidence-building exercises on the different courses, including tower climbing, rappelling and a high ropes course. Students also learned about wilderness survival, BB guns, archery and canoeing. Other activities included lessons about trusting and working with complete strangers.

“It was a great experience,” Harder said. “The students really had some great reflections on their time. They enjoyed meeting new people, overcoming challenges and learning how to work with others.”
