Spectrum hosts Gift of Life Donor Drive

BIG RAPIDS — In honor of National Organ Donor Awareness Month and to increase the number of organ donors in Mecosta County, Spectrum Health Big Rapids Hospital is hosting a Gift of Life Donor Drive.

The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, April 25, in the Spectrum Health Big Rapids Hospital lobby. Individuals who are 18 or older can register, and parents or legal guardians must give permission for those younger than 18.

During the drive, hospital staff will be on hand to answer questions about organ donations and provide assistance when registering on the State of Michigan online donor registry. Other information regarding the topic will be on site for attendees to share with friends and family.

According to Gift of Life Michigan, based in Ann Arbor, each organ donor can save up to eight lives and each tissue donor can save up to 50 lives. Last year, 915 lives were saved from 284 organ donors.

Already this year, more than 3,300 patients in Michigan are waiting for organ transplants. Kindeys are in the highest demand, followed by the liver, lungs and heart.
