Special cancer survivor celebration set for May 13
EVART — There may not be a Relay for Life in Osceola County this year, but that isn't stopping Judy Foster from wanting to honor those who have beaten cancer.
Foster, along with her daughter, are spearheading a Survivor Celebration to honor residents who have beaten cancer at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, at Community Building at the Osceola County 4-H/FFA Fairgrounds in Evart.
"We're basically doing this celebration because it is the last chance to get all of these survivors together in one group," she said. "We want to thank them and tell them all that we've enjoyed having them around for all these years."
Earlier this year, American Cancer Society officials decided not to have the annual event in Osceola County, said Amanda Bosherz, ACS division communications manager, inviting residents to participate in events in Mecosta or Wexford counties.
The Survivor Celebration will include a luncheon, banner lap and luminary ceremony, said Foster, who has served on the local Relay for Life committee for more than a decade.
"We're going to be inside at the Community Building," she said. "We'll have a survivor lap and luminary lap — for one last time here."
Foster said all cancer survivors are welcome to attend. There is no invitation needed to attend.
"We're going to have food for the luncheon," she said. "We won't know for sure who will be here. People can just show up."
Throughout the celebration, Foster said they will be giving away the Survivor Banners that have been used as part of the Relay for Life event over the last few years.
Foster said the event is being organized around the number of cancer survivors they have gotten to know over the years of participating in Relay for Life.
"We've been involved for so long and know most of them very well," she said. "We're just doing this as something special. We're not affiliated with any group or anything like that. It's just something we've been wanting to do for our survivors."
