Seventh annual writers' workshop set for April 22

CADILLAC — “Do It Yourself: How to Self-Publish Your Book Free on CreateSpace” is the theme of the seventh annual workshop sponsored by Write To Publish.

The event takes place from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 22, at the Clam Lake Township Hall in Cadillac. Advance registration is not required. There is a minimal admission fee.

Area writers, aspiring writers and anyone interested in publishing a book will have the opportunity to hear a panel of four speakers, all members of Write To Publish.

In discussions combining theory and practical examples, the speakers will draw upon their writing and publishing experience.

In his presentation “The Power of a Writers’ Group,” William Allcorn will describe the benefit of belonging to a writers’ group and how Write To Publish has encouraged and supported both his writing and his path to publication.

In “Understanding CreateSpace,” Randy Rassoul provides a comprehensive overview of the CreateSpace system — a free do-it-yourself online publishing platform—and the publishing tools it offers writers.

Peggy Hoard will demonstrate how to produce a book free on CreateSpace. In “Mastering CreateSpace,” Hoard outlines the step-by-step, do-it-yourself process of creating a book online from cover design to interior layout to printing the finished product.

“Tips, Tricks and Lessons Learned” is a list of valuable dos and don’ts compiled by Yvonne Hebert. Her advice, based on extensive CreateSpace publishing experience, will help authors attain the best results from the service.

Write To Publish is a local writers’ group with members from Cadillac and surrounding communities including Tustin, Manton, Marion and Lake City. The group meets from 1 to 3 p.m. every other Tuesday in the function room of Big Boy restaurant in Cadillac.

Typical activities include group critique of works in progress submitted by members, 300 word pieces inspired by an intriguing word prompt and sharing of information, expertise and tips related to the creative process, editing, grammar, publishing, marketing, contests, conferences, workshops and other topics of interest to the writing community.

“I hope many area authors will come to the workshop and see why hundreds of thousands of books are published on CreateSpace and learn how they can use this free do-it-yourself system to publish their books,” said Hoard, Write To Publish chair. “Our workshops are also a great way to meet other writers. Attendees always enjoy socializing and sharing ideas.”
