Sears woman to face charges in Clare County after accident

HARRISON — A Sears woman faces charges after she left the scene of a car accident, which injured her son.

According to the Clare County Sheriff's Office, Elaine Garlitz, 31, of Sears, was arrested on May 3 and arraigned in 80th District Court on three charges: failing to stop at a traffic crash resulting in serious injury, operating a vehicle with no insurance and failing to report a traffic crash involving injury.

Garlitz's charges stem from a May 2 car accident, the sheriff's office said. At 10:40 p.m., on May 2, Clare County Central Dispatch received a call about a single-vehicle crash with injuries. The caller told dispatchers her juvenile stepson was in a vehicle with his biological mother and was involved in a crash.

Responding deputies met the caller, who told them that she met with the child's mother and took the child. The caller and her stepson were transported by a Mobile Medical Response ambulance for treatment of a laceration to the child's head. Deputies were able to locate the scene of the crash in the area of Cedar Road and M-115 in Freeman Township. The vehicle was gone from the scene. Deputies were able to locate items at the scene to identify Garlitz. Deputies went to Garlitz's residence and located the vehicle involved in the crash, a white, 2002 Buick LeSabre with significant damage.

Garlitz's bond is set at $35,000 cash surety.

Assisting at the scene were Lincoln Township Fire and Rescue, MMR and the Osceola County Sheriff's Office.
