School board looking to fill vacancy left by Johnson Himes

LEROY — The Pine River Area Schools Board of Education is seeking an individual to fill the position of a vacancy left by former board trustee Becky Johnson Himes, who announced her resignation at the Sept. 9 board meeting.

PRAS Superintendent Jim Ganger said the new board member should want the best for the district.

“We’re looking for someone dedicated to the interest of the students, one who can look at the overall picture of the district, support the district in its policies and procedures and help improve the district,” Ganger said.

Board policy states “if the vacancy is not filled within 30 days after it occurs, the Board of the Intermediate School District shall fill the vacancy”.

To be eligible, individuals must be at least 18 years old, a registered voter in the Pine River Area Schools District, a citizen of the United States, a resident of Michigan for the last 30 days and a resident of the school district on or before the 30th day prior to the appointment date.

Ganger said the newest member can expect to attend at least one board meeting each month, board workshops and receive training from the Michigan Association of School Boards. Regular meetings take place at 6 p.m. on the second Monday of each month.

Letters of interest are due by 4 p.m. on Monday and a member will be appointed at a special board meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. on Sept. 30. The appointed person will serve on the board until the next regular school election of November 2014. Ganger said the district has already received a couple of letters, but welcomes more.

Interested individuals can send letters to James Peterson, President, Pine River Board of Education, 17445 Pine River Road, LeRoy, Mich., 49655.
