EVART — Fall fun will mix with feeding local families this month at the final gathering of Evart Farmers Market for the year.

The second annual scarecrow contest will take place from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11, at the market, located at the Evart Depot. Proceeds from the contest will be donated to the Sears Food Pantry.

"We want it to be a fun event and want to keep it down here to highlight the Haunted Park and highlight Monster Mash," said Evart Farmers Market Master June-Marie Essner. "It was fun last year and it's a fun way to end the farmers market. Supporting the Sears Food Pantry seems like a good fit with the market."

The cost to join the contest is $10 and participants are required to register on Saturday, Oct. 4, at the market. There, they will receive a form and then may begin crafting their scarecrow at home before bringing it back the following Saturday for the contest.

Scarecrows must be family-friendly and able to withstand all weather conditions. Electronic pieces are not allowed.

Market attendees will be able to vote on which scarecrow they like best by providing a monetary donation, which will go to the Sears Food Pantry. The contest winner will receive a basket filled with items from farmers market vendors.

Following the event, the scarecrows will be placed downtown through the month of October to help bring awareness to the Haunted Park and Monster Mash events. They can be picked up on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
