Rob the Drummer entertains EPS students

EVART — Students within Evart Public Schools were able to be inspired musically and ethically by a special performer and speaker known as Rob the Drummer.

Rob the Drummer, or Rob Gottfried, has been featured on television shows including "Sesame Street," Entertainment Tonight," "Romper Room," "Ariel, Zoey & Eli" and more. He uses drums to reach and connect with children.

"Using drums, I get them to drop their defense screens because I'm going where they live rhythmically," he said. "Once I have that established, they might actually listen to what I say, which is significant stuff no one wants to talk about, like anti-drugs, anti-bullying, and having a dream and keeping it alive."

Gottfried has been performing as Rob the Drummer for more than 15 years with the help of Dr. Roger and Coco Newton and the Esperanze Family Foundation. Because of the sponsorship, the assembly was at no cost to the district, and the show was set up with the help of the Michigan State Police.

"When I come into an area, I talk to teachers and principals, find out what makes the students tick and we want to bring some joy to the kids," Gottfried said. "You walk into a situation where they trust no one and you've got to prove yourself. I love when I capture their real attention."
