Ride for a cure

Sixth ride to raise money to help cancer patients

CHASE — The sixth annual Ride for a Cure, a night and day event on D Bar D Ranch devoted to having fun while standing up to cancer, will begin on Friday, Sept. 16, and continue on to Saturday, Sept. 17, this year.

“We started this when we were a new business and wanted a way to give back to the community,” said Don Beach, owner of D Bar D Ranch and Ride for a Cure organizer. “We hope for a bigger and better year this year.”

This annual ride raises money that will be donated to the Susan P. Wheatlake Regional Cancer Center in Reed City, with this year’s goal being $21,000.

Because of the donations raised during the Ride for a Cure event, Spectrum can give free integrative therapies, library resources, wigs, hats and scarves to cancer patients, as well as provide transportation assistance, said Susan Snavley, director of the Spectrum Health Foundation.

From the first event to the fifth, Beach said more than $100,000 has been raised for the fight against cancer.

On Friday, a fun speed show will begin at 5 p.m. and will be followed by a performance from the Borderline Band, playing from 8 to 11 p.m. The fun show will include barrel racing, pole bending and other typical equestrian speed events, Beach said.

Saturday the fun begins at 1 p.m. with an approximately 10-mile trail ride, Beach said. Normally, if a visitor does not have a horse, D Bar D has a few rental horses, however, those have been spoken for this year. Wagons will carry participants who do not have a horse or do not like riding. Beach said 200 people have registered for this year’s ride.

Dinner will be a pig roast, starting at 6 p.m., and starting at 8 p.m., Grand Rapids-based band Stolen Horses will perform.

A silent auction will open on Friday and run until Saturday evening. Prizes and awards can be won.

To participate in the ride, visitors will need to pay $25 per person, or at least $25 in pledges.
