Ride for a Cure returns for fifth year
Beach hopes to break 2014 donation
CHASE — Fighting and eliminating cancer is the name of the game during the D Bar D Ranch fifth annual Ride for a Cure.
The event is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, and features the opportunity to ride the trails spanning eight to 10 miles on horseback. For those who wish to participate, but do not have a horse or do not want to ride the full route, a wagon will carry passengers.
D Bar D Ranch owner and Ride for a Cure organizer Don Beach believes this year will be even better, with more than 200 people expected to participate.
"It looks like a blowout and that it's going to be good again this year," he said. "I'm looking forward to the overall response and the positivity that comes out of it. It's turned out to be a real pleasure for me to put on and see everyone enjoying it."
Following the ride, a pig roast will begin at 6 p.m. followed by live music by Stolen Horses, a Grand Rapids-based country band, at 8 p.m. The group has performed at the Ride for a Cure event since its beginning.
A silent auction, prizes and awards also will take place throughout the benefit. Beach said there's a need for additional silent auction items and welcomes businesses or organizations who wish to donate something for the cause.
Other activities are scheduled throughout the weekend at the ranch, including a fun speed show at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11, and a pancake breakfast at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12.
All proceeds from Ride for a Cure will benefit the Susan P. Wheatlake Regional Cancer Center in Reed City. Last year, the event helped raise $21,000. In total, the event has raised nearly $90,000.
"It's an awesome response," Beach said. "The event means so much to the people out here. The response is really overwhelming."
With the hundreds of attendees expected to ride, he is hopeful to break last year's record.
"I hate to put a number out there, but I'd love to see over $25,000 this year and I see nothing holding us back," Beach added.
The cost to participate in Ride for a Cure is $25 per person or at least $25 in pledges. For more information or to offer an auction item, call Don Beach at (231) 832-3143. D Bar D Ranch is located at 7064 E. 64th St. in Chase. A pledge sheet can be printed at dbardranchmichigan.com.
