Reed City students receive scholarships
REED CITY -- Two Reed City High School class of 2020 graduates were presented with $1,100 scholarship awards from the Reed City Moose Lodge 705 at the graduation ceremony on July 17.
Ryleigh Adams and Michael Zachary Saez each received a Dean Riechow Scholarship Award for 2020.
Adams will be attending Ferris State University to study Pre-Veterinarian. Saez will be attending Alpena Community College to study Utility Technology.
To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must be a child or grandchild of an active Moose Lodge member. They must submit an application and go through an in-person interview.
Criteria considered for the award include community service hours, leadership roles and the student's grade point average, as well as other things.
The scholarship program is supported through fundraising events. The Reed City Car Show is normally one of their biggest fundraisers, but it was canceled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Scholarship Committee and local Moose Lodge members also host volunteer dinners each week. Local members come in and make a donation to eat and the proceeds go toward the scholarship fund.
The number of scholarships awarded each year, an the amount of the awards depends on how many applications are received.
