Reed City prepares for annual Crossroads Festival

REED CITY — The largest event in Reed City is just around the corner, and will bring traditional fun as well as new excitement for all ages as thousands gather to enjoy this year's lineup of events during The Great American Crossroads Festival.

The festival will offer events each day from Thursday, Aug. 14, through Sunday, Aug. 17, throughout the city's downtown and parks.

"We're really excited," said Reed City Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Suzie Williams. "It's all coming together really well and we're hoping for good weather."

The annual Miss Reed City Pageant will feature female and male contestants starting at 6 p.m. on Aug. 14 at Westerburg Park, following a 5 p.m. baked potato supper hosted by the Knights of Columbus at the Reed City Depot. During the pageant, sponsored by the Reed City General Federation of Women’s Clubs, a queen, junior queen, princess and prince will be crowned. Applications are due by Friday, Aug. 8, and are located at the Reed City Depot, Nica’s Boutique and online at

Friday, Aug. 15, will feature the newest event, Battle of the Bands, which will allow six local groups to compete and perform before a panel of judges.

"We've been wanting to try it for a long time, so we thought, 'Let's just do it,'" Williams said. "We have a lot of local bands and local talent."

Each band will perform for about 20 to 30 minutes in hopes of winning a $500 cash prize. Spectators can attend the event for a low-cost entrance fee.

Friday also hosts other events, including a book sale, spaghetti supper, jazz and blues concert, and the festival parade, which will travel down Upton Avenue beginning at 6 p.m. All are welcome to join the parade and compete for cash prizes for best entries. Those who wish to participate can register at the chamber office, Williams said.

The largest day of the festival is Saturday, Aug. 16, with events beginning at 8 a.m. and lasting through 1 a.m. on Sunday. Events for all ages will occur throughout the city, including a pancake breakfast, youth mini soccer camp, car show, 5K Fun Run, chicken barbecue, paintball tournament and more. Shops in the downtown area also will be open for business, ready to serve shoppers with every need.

Williams said the local businesses certainly benefit from the increased foot traffic.

"The Crossroads Festival brings people into town, shopping around, enjoying the local businesses," she said. "The stores will be busy."

Sporting events, including a youth mini soccer camp, and tournaments for baseball, little league, softball and paintball also will take place throughout the four-day festival.

The Great American Crossroads Festival is one to bring the community together in celebration and reunion. In addition, it allows the businesses and organizations to work as one to create a successful celebration.

"I think it's great that they all come together to do this," Williams said. "It helps them and enables us to have all of the events we offer."
