Reed City police warning residents of phone scam
REED CITY – Law enforcement officials are warning residents of a scam aimed at collecting money in return of keeping their electric service operating.
According to the Reed City Police Department, officials have received reports from residents that individuals claiming to be representatives of Consumers Energy are calling them and asking for immediate payment of funds or else their electric service will be cut off.
According to a release, the scammers provide a call-back number that is answered by individuals claiming to be “customer service.” Consumers Energy has confirmed this is a scam, the department said.
Residents who believe they received a call from an individual asking for payment are advised not to give out any personal information or money over the phone.
Furthermore, residents should contact Consumers Energy directly to verify the validity of the phone call.
