BIG RAPIDS – A Reed City man was arraigned on two felony assault charges on Monday after stabbing a man at a Big Rapids bar on Friday.

Simon Shelton, 22, is charged with one count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, and one count of felonious assault with a deadly weapon.

The first charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, while the second is punishable by up four years in prison.

Police say Shelton was extremely intoxicated on Thursday night at the Gypsy Nickel Lounge, located at 228 Baldwin Street in Big Rapids. Around 1:50 a.m. on Friday, when the bar was due to close, he was escorted out of the bar by an employee and some of the employee’s friends.

Shelton allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed one of the friends of that bar employee in the abdomen. The victim managed to wrestle Shelton to the ground, at which point another person grabbed his knife and gave it to the bar employee. They were able to hold him until police arrived.

The victim was later taken to a Grand Rapids hospital for treatment.

Shelton is tentatively scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary examination at 1:30 p.m. on March 12. He remains in Mecosta County Jail on a $100,000 bond.
