Reed City gun ends up in downstate school
REED CITY — A gun that showed up in a Genesee County school in March has been traced back to Reed City.
The small-caliber handgun was one of several stolen in 2006 from now-defunct Jim’s Riverside Sports and Spirits, said Reed City Police Chief Chuck Davis. Shaker’s Deli and Party Store now occupies the building.
A first grade student showed the gun inside a backpack to another student on March 25 at Dye Elementary School in Genesee County’s Flint Township. Officials say the other student told a teacher, the backpack was confiscated and police were called, according to the Flint Journal. No one was injured, and the gun was not loaded at the time.
Genesee County authorities still are trying to determine how the child acquired the gun.
After being stolen in Reed City, the gun likely was sold several times before it reached Genesee County, Davis said.
“This is seven years later, so we won’t know how it traveled,” he said. “When they called us, we were about as shocked as anyone else.”
The fact that the gun showed up in a school should serve as a reminder to parents and gun owners to keep careful watch over their gun collections, Davis said.
“As a parents, we should be checking to make sure we know where stuff is. If we think it can’t happen to us, here’s a connection to our little town,” he said.
“Take a good look at your gun closets and double check that things are where we think they are. We just want people to be aware of that.”
