Reed City Hospital named a top hospital by Leapfrog Group

REED CITY — For the first time, Spectrum Health Big Rapids and Reed City hospitals were both recognized by The Leapfrog Group, an organization that evaluates the safety and quality performance of U.S. hospitals.

“At Big Rapids and Reed City Hospitals, it’s important to us that patients receive the highest quality of care in the safest manner,” said Mary Kay VanDriel, president of Big Rapids and Reed City hospitals. “It’s an honor to be recognized by The Leapfrog Group for the high standards we set for ourselves.”

Reed City Hospital earned the 2015 Leapfrog Top Rural Hospital award. Less than 5 percent of U.S. hospitals receive this award, which is based on the hospital’s value score, a combination of quality scores and resource use. The hospital must also meet Leapfrog’s standard for preventing medication errors. Reed City Hospital was one of 98 Top Hospitals recognized, and one of only 24 considered Rural Hospitals.

“Leapfrog’s Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most prestigious distinctions any hospital can achieve in the United States. By achieving Top Hospital status, Reed City Hospital has proven it prioritizes the safety of its patients,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Our families, neighbors, colleagues and friends deserve a hospital that will pull out all the stops to keep them safe.”

Big Rapids Hospital earned an “A” on the Fall 2015 Hospital Safety Score. The Hospital Safety Score is a composite score made up of 28 different, nationally-reported patient safety measures that indicate how well hospitals protect patients from preventable errors, injuries and infections. More than 2,500 general hospitals were scored on a scale from A to F, with only 773 hospitals receiving the A grade. This score is for general, acute-care hospitals. Although Reed City Hospital received the Top Rural Hospital award, it does not qualify for a grade rating because it is a critical access hospital.

“Big Rapids Hospital’s 'A' grade is a powerful reminder of its commitment to putting patient safety above all else,” Binder said. “We are pleased to recognize the persistent efforts of clinicians and staff to protect patients.”
