Reed City High School holds relay fundraiser
REED CITY — The American Cancer Society is well known for their Relay for Life fundraiser, which is held here in Osceola County in Evart in late June.
The Reed City Student Council wanted to do something that brought more awareness of the event to students. They started discussing ideas a few years ago and as a result last year was the first “Pass for Class” event.
Students in 9th thru 12th grades were allowed purchase a pass for $2 for each of their classes to attend the event.
This year about 320 students purchased anywhere from one pass to five passes to get out of class and join their classmates on the track and football field.
It was a beautiful sunny day. The students took laps around the track or played various games of soccer, Frisbee, or football. “I am already taking suggestions of how we can make this a better event in the coming years as well as having some speakers to spread even more awareness,” said Karen Shewan, faculty advisor for the student council.
The council raised about $1,000 with the passes and they plan to ask for more donations so they can reach their goal of $1500. It is their intention to present a check with the final amount to the American Cancer Society at the Osceola Relay for Life in honor of a former Student Council president who is fighting her own battle against cancer.
