Reed City, Evart libraries offer holiday basket auction

REED CITY — Two Osceola County libraries are featuring similar silent basket auctions, with opportunities to win dozens of baskets filled with gifts perfect for a special someone on a Christmas list.

This type of event is a first for the Reed City Area District Library, which will feature approximately 20 baskets from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 28, at the Reed City Depot during the Evergreen Festival. Patrons can bid on the baskets at the library until 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 16.

"There might be something in these baskets to tickle one's fancy," said Bette Newell, a library board member. "There's something for everyone."

She said baskets will include items such as car care products, beauty items and products made in Osceola County.

Money raised from the Reed City event will go toward the renovation of the future library building on Chestnut Street, Newell added.

The Reed City Area District Library is located on the first floor of the Annex Building, at 410 W. Upton Ave. For more, call (231) 832- 2131.

The Evart Public Library's fourth annual Christmas basket silent auction will begin on Monday, Nov. 30, and will last until noon on Thursday, Dec. 10.

"We have a lot of great baskets for guys and girls," said library director Lilas VanScoyoc. "People are getting very excited and already asking about them."

Interested patrons can view and bid on the baskets during the library’s open hours. On the first day of bidding, punch and cookies will be offered. Money raised from the event will benefit the library and assist in repairing a door window broken during a vandalism incident.

More than 40 baskets will be available for bids, filled with a variety of items. Many baskets have specific themes, including food, children, sports, relaxation, chocolate, reading or gardening. Last year, the auction raised more than $1,600.

"I think the silent auction is a great way to get Christmas gifts for people and to support your local library," VanScoyoc added.

The Evart Public Library is located at 104 N. Main St. For more information about the basket auction, call the library at (231) 734-5542.
