REED CITY — Members of Katie's Kloset, a local nonprofit which collects clothes for kids in need, visited Reed City High School at an assembly Friday morning to collect a donation for more than $6,000.

Students and staff set a goal of raising $1,000 for the organization at an assembly Dec. 12, but in just a week, they were able to pass their goal and raised $3,102. With a promise to double up to $3,000 in donations, Gerber Construction pitched in an additional $3,000, making the donation $6,102.

Katie's Kloset was created by the Reed City General Federation of Women's Clubs in honor of former member Katie Scharlow, who died of cancer in 2012.

Her father, Dave Scharlow, longtime staff member at RCHS, was surprised with the fundraiser at the Dec. 12 assembly, as a way to thank him for his hard work, Principal Matt Hudson said.
