Presentation to discuss benefits of local tourism

OSCEOLA COUNTY — For those with the desire to attract visitors to a specific area, figuring out that area's selling points can be the difference between watching people pass by and keeping them within a community's borders.

Understanding Tourism for Michigan Communities is a seminar hosted by Michigan State University Extension, the Reed City Area Chamber of Commerce and Community Development of Osceola County. A free presentation will take place from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 23, at the Reed City Depot.

"Every county has something for someone to come see, and we'll take a look at what the area has with a focus on Osceola County," said Osceola County Community Development Coordinator Dan Massy. "I'll be looking at how to develop that 'niche tourism.'"

During the discussion, topics include:

  • The magnitude of tourism and trends shaping the industry
  • Who tourists are; what their interests are; what their needs are
  • Identify opportunities and maximize tourism trends for your community
  • How niche tourism markets can help leverage your community assets
  • Strategies to introduce and plan for tourism in your community

Massy said all are welcome, but groups involved with recreation, business, economic development and school districts may be especially interested in attending the event.
