Pioneer hires sports, Osceola County reporters

BIG RAPIDS - The Pioneer recently has welcomed two reporters to its newsroom.

Sports writer Greg Buckner is a graduate of Ferris State University. He served as the sports editor of the Ferris State Torch. He previously worked as a local news reporter for the Ogemaw County Herald in West Branch.

“We’re very excited to welcome Greg as a member of our Sports department,” said Sports Editor Martin Slagter. “In a search that included many good candidates, Greg’s enthusiasm for all sports, diverse skill set and hunger to report beyond the final score made him an ideal fit. We look forward to Greg providing outstanding prep sports coverage for all of our area teams.”

Buckner will replace longtime Preps Sports Writer Bob Allan, who has taken a graphic design job within the company.

“Bob is a valued employee who will continue to work on the Pioneer as well as many of our other publications,” said Pioneer Editor Dave Clark. “We will miss his insightful sports columns and detailed reporting. Bob’s new job will allow him to focus on his design and editing skills while providing a more family-friendly work schedule.”

Karin Armbruster will serve as the Pioneer’s Osceola County reporter. She will write for the Pioneer and the Osceola County weekly newspaper, the Herald Review.

Armbruster previously worked as a staff writer at the Ionia Sentinel-Standard. She is a graduate of Grand Valley State University and worked as a writer and editor at the school newspaper, The Lanthorn.

“Karin is an enthusiastic reporter and a talented storyteller,” Clark said. “I think Osceola County residents are going to love working with her and following her work.”
